After determining your ideology you are better able to decide upon a political party.  Generally, liberals associate with the Democratic Party and conservatives associate with the Republican Party.  However, it is possible for a Democrat to be more conservative than a Republican and a Republican to be more liberal than a Democrat.  Party members from different regions of the country are often more liberal or conservative than their national party.  For example, Oklahoma Democrats are often more conservative than the National Democratic Party.  Further, Republicans in the Northeastern United States are frequently more liberal then the National Republican Party.  Finally, both parties have large portions of centrists or moderates.
